Left-handed calligraphers

topic posted Tue, July 27, 2004 - 10:28 PM by  Mark
I have been enjoying calligraphy for years. Writing with calligraphic pens with my left hand, I had to conform to a right handed tool! Frustrating at times especially for those flourishes when using those dang metal pen nibs that can get caught in the paper. I've actually come up with my own ways to write and have already tried the "left-handed" nibs but to no avail. I can write pretty smoothly otherwise but wanted to know if there are any other lefties out there who've got some finesse or tricks with technique when writing. Yes, it's a right-handed world (in more ways than one!!)

I'm left-handed, and I basically "write upside down", that is, my hand is hooked above the line I am writing, and not straight and below it as a right-hander's would be. I think most left-handers develop ways of working around the fact that for us, writing from left to right is just basically more difficult than it is for right-handers. I'm not sure if there are any tricks specific to calligraphy; I learnt this way of writing for my normal everyday handwriting.

I'm taking a calligraphy class now. I hate the institutionalized right-hand fascism. And I'm right-handed. Always had a thing for underdogs, maybe it makes me feel useful.

I would love to see left-handers make their own rules (an old dude I met at TypeCon last year, by the name of Lefty - Jill Bell introduced me - has done just that for decades, he even teaches it) instead of writing with "handicap" nibs or backwards or whatever. It would be so nice to see expressions of DIFFERENCE instead of warped conformance.

Then there's the book "Left-Handed Calligraphy" by Vance Studley (master printer).

BTW, I'm new to this Tribe thing, and my main question is: could it help me purchase a gently-used mobile katyousha battery, please? I suffer from warjoy: news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/4174803.stm

Last night was my final calligraphy lesson, and I did an envelope in an "antique" style - a scan of it is in my profile's photo album. It was done without any guide lines (hence the jumpiness), but at least the rough, absorbent paper hides some more serious flaws...

(If I had to do that with my left hand, it would have resulted in something I would worry about showing to my MOTHER.)
