Calligraphers?

topic posted Tue, March 23, 2004 - 11:18 AM by  Mojave

Any calligraphers here? I putz with it, I'm by no means a pro. I have a set of Sheaffer pens, a set of Speedballs & some off-brand points that are fun to putz with.

I'd like to putter with font-creation software someday, too, but have NO idea how to go about it.

    Greetings, Mojave!
I'm a calligrapher but use brushes rather than pens in most cases. I learned calligraphy wth a pen about 25 years ago and stayed with the pen until the early 90's when I took two brush lettering classes which were an artistic epiphany! I realized I had finally found my calligraphic medium! I've been using a brush ever since and have gotten good enough at it that I now teach occasionally. I thoroughly enjoy it and, interestingly enough, it has even led me back to using markers and pens again - everything comes full circle!
I'm also intrigued by font-creation but so far haven't had time or enough inclination. I have designed alphabets for needlepoint and cross stitch embroiderey which approximate calligraphy with some success.
Anyway, good to meet cha, Mojave!

I've been doing calligraphy since 1989. All with old Mitchell and Brause nibs. Haven't done much lately due to other duties but glad to see people still interested in it. My later stuff was concerned with the creation of faux scripts, scripts I've created to look like foreign languages but are actually readable (sometimes) English. Does that count as font creation?

Anyway it's good to be in touch with other calligraphers.

I'm a newbie and it's great to see some Calligraphers have made themselves known. I'm a relative novice to Calligraphy, only 5 years or so, but I work hard at it and love experimenting as much as possible. I attend a class once a week too...it really helps to interact with others.

Looking forward to seeing some nice work posted.

I love your stuff, especially the the Voltaire quote with the paper crumpled and the use of touches of color. VERY nice!

Thank you! It was a happy accident: tried printing it at Kinkos on some handmade paper and it jammed! When I pulled it out it was already crumpled, so I thought: just ball that sucker up and see what happens.
So much better than on the smooth surface.

I was very impressed with that crinkle effect too. It's great when an accident turns into something positive and creative! I liked your Whitehead piece too...the layout has a very nice visual shape.
Most of my work lies unseen in an art folder but you've spurred me on to reveal one or two of them in my profile!

Oh yeah! Post em! It's so good to get feedback from other calligraphers.

Something my teacher used to tell me was : just DO some pieces, then put em away, go back to them later with a fresh mind, and DO it again!

Are you all as perfectionistic as I am? I swear, I'm aware of EVERY littel bungle or imbalance. And like golf, calligraphy is not a game of 'perfect'.

One way I used to practice is by doing my math homework in calligraphy. My professors probably thought I was a freak. But there really isn't anything much more beautiful than an integral sign done with a Speedball C-3.

Got around to scanning a few of my calligraphy pieces which I've now posted. Only the people in my calligraphy class, my husband, and a few friends have seen them before!

Thank you Mojave...for taking the time to look and for such an enthusiastic response. I lost count on how many attempts it took to make madness look "mad" rather than messy!

We need to encourage others to post their work to create an online gallery.

Indeed. I think we could give each other helpful feedback. Who else has unposted calligraphy?

Thank you so much for such a positive response! I really appreciate it. It may just spur me into spending more time creating and perhaps less time clicking away at this keyboard!

This tribe's photos are mostly typography or signage, so maybe there's a call for creating a breakaway lettering tribe devoted to calligraphy - unless there is one already...?
