i know what kering "is" or "means"
but where does the word come from?

    I think it derives from adjusting the "kern" spacking on a piece of type

    Kern \Kern\, n. (Type Founding)
    A part of the face of a type which projects beyond the body,
    or shank, such as in certain italic letters.
