Hi Folks,

I am happy to report that I have a Lettering class starting up soon. We did this last year and it was fun!

GRPH 151 Lettering and Type
Wednesdays: 1:00–5:00pm
CCSF Ocean Campus: 50 Phelan Ave., Health Center 207
8-week course: August 16–October 4
CRN 76937

Here is a gallery of last year's student work:
http://www.ccsf.edu/Departments/Graphic_Communications/Gallery/Student/Lettering_Type/Lettering_Type.htm

And here is the catalog entry for a formal description (ignore the pre-requisite):
http://www.ccsf.edu/Catalog/Art/grphcors.html#GRPH%20151

All that entry requires is enrolling at City College:
http://www.ccsf.edu/Offices/Matriculation/step1.htm>.

Everything else we can take care of on the first day of class. It's a one-unit class, making it a whopping $26!

Feel free to email me with questions,

I know this goes along the lines of tattoo lettering but was having a hard time finding a way to put my "2 cents" in on another tread. I'm trying to find out what kind of lettering they did for a guy who got his great grandmothers name tattoo on him on Miami Ink. Or something around that style. But I'm not sure what it would be called. Any help would be appreicated.

Hmm, not sure of one right off the bat, but you might do a Google *image* search for "lettering guide" or something like that.

Hope that works for you.

What I am looking for is what they called in the mid-late 50's early-mid 60's covert artwork I want to have a full face and side of head large scale tattoo done but i want to have several nasty-vulgar words added into the drawing-picture so you either have to be real close like a foot away or like 15+ feet to read it or its just part of the lines in the pattern-picture. There used to be don't know if its still published a childrens magazine called Highlites. It used to have several pictures in it where you would have to find the dog or anvil or several items or words, thats what I want to do. Anyone out there know where I can find such artwork on knows someone who can draw such artwork for me? Slave Allan

The best Copperplate nib around at the moment I'm told is made by a company called LEONARDT - the nib is named PRINCIPAL.

I've been using one for a week or so and it's brilliant. My Calligraphy teacher says these nibs are so good the letters practically write themselves! Not quite in my case but it's certainly improved my letterforms.

A part of the face of a type which projects beyond the body,

I've got one of those "kinky" nibs but just can't get on with it. I pefer a straight nib and turn the paper on an angle instead.

I do attend a Calligraphy class and have picked up a few tips. The nib is very important...they can be very scratchy so you have to find one that writes smoothly. Also use gouache instead of ink - it flows better and gives a smoother finish to the letters. Copperplate is probably like all calligraphy - attention to the letterforms and lots of practice is the key. Haven't looked at any books so I'll check out amazon.

My tutor has told us that a Copperplate master calligrapher is coming to our class to do a demonstration in a few weeks time. Bound to get something from that!

ooh, that's been on my list for a while. Do you have the pen holder with the 135 degree holder? I think taking a class would be the best way to learn. However, there are a couple of books on amazon that look pretty good. I've tried a few flourishes and have respect for the skill involved!

Thank you Mojave...for taking the time to look and for such an enthusiastic response. I lost count on how many attempts it took to make madness look "mad" rather than messy!
